Fresh-Pressed Beauty

By Jessica Arnaudin

Let’s talk color! This season, we draw inspiration from the vibrant, farm-fresh hues abundant at our favorite juice bar. These shades deliver a juicy dose of color, look great on a multitude of skin tones, and are sure to keep you feeling radiant from day to night. After trying these energizing fruit and veggie-inspired shades, we’re sure your hearts will BEET for them too!

What You’ll Need:

These shades are wonderful for more reasons than just their flattery, vibrance, and hypoallergenic, good-for-you benefits: they are buildable (for just a hint of color) and versatile. Use them together (instructions below) for full-on, fresh-pressed glam. Or, use them individually for a pop of fresh-pressed color just where you want it — in the photo above, Sam (far left) applied all shades (she chose Danger for lips) but used a light touch; Jess went with Spitfire, very lightly applied, on lips, and went heavier with Bellini on cheeks; and Georgia chose the berry smoky eye with Chalet.

How To “Dew” Fresh-Pressed Glam:

Take a page from this purple superfood – it translates perfectly into a stunning smoky eye!

Use the darker side (Laura’s Burgundy) of Two True Hues Eyeshadow palette in ‘Chalet’ to contour eyes.

With an angled brush, smudge (H)Eyebrow in ‘Brown’ along lashline.

Finish with two coats of Ooh-La-Lash! Mascara.

Add a warm flush of color inspired by the sweetness of nature.

Highlight cheekbones with Skin Bloom Blush in ‘Bellini’. For deeper skin tones, try ‘Heat’.

Pigment-drenched opaque shades ensure statement-making lips! Like all Skintelligent Beauty lipsticks, these are infused with antioxidant green tea and virgin coconut oil for healthy hydration.

Try Velvet Matte Lipstick in ‘Spitfire’ or ‘Danger’.

Take It “Skinside”:

All makeup looks better on naturally healthy skin! Try this recipe to glow “skinside-out!”

Feed your glow with this quick and easy green smoothie designed to nourish skin from the inside out! Here at VMV Hypoallergenics, it’s no secret that we are crazy about the hydrating and healing properties of the almighty coconut. That’s why we added coconut water to this delicious blend! It provides moisture to skin that may be dehydrated from transepidermal water loss and it’s packed with electrolytes to keep you energized all day long. Enjoy this verdant blend as a morning breakfast booster — freeze leftovers in ice molds for future smoothie making!

  • 2 cups unsweetened coconut water
  • 2 cups fresh pineapple, frozen in chunks
  • 1 ½ cup fresh spinach, stems removed
  • ½ avocado

  1. Blend coconut water and spinach until smooth.
  2. Add frozen pineapple and avocado. Blend again until creamy texture is achieved.
  3. Sip and enjoy!

5 Habits To “Spring Clean” For Healthy Skin

Skin care is never just about the skin’s surface. Your diet, stress levels, amount of sleep, and exercise all contribute to your skin’s clarity and health. As you spring clean your closet, take these 5 habits out to the trash to make room for vibrant, fresh, healthy skin:

Junk The Junk

There just is no redeeming factor to junk food (processed candy, chips, colas, juices, energy drinks, snacks). The body doesn’t know how to process several of the ingredients used to preserve, color, or flavor many of these products, and excesses get stored as fat or, as new research is showing, potentially harmful buildup in the brain. Skin-wise, colorants are common allergens that are known to cause rashes or acne around the mouth and chin, and in some severe cases, all over the body. The junk is addictive, too, so it’s best to get off it and stay off it.

Treat Perfection As Passé

Sugar, pasta, rice, bread, crackers: avoid the pristine uniformity of white options and look for healthy variants like whole wheat, wild, brown, coconut, and other more fibrous, less processed alternatives.

Check out the farm-fresh produce in the photo below: imperfectly perfect, just as nature intended. Choose organic produce as often as you can. And consider growing your own! If you have kids, window or garden growing is an excellent activity to do together that gets them outside (more healthy activity, less tech!) and teaches them not only about nature but about where their food comes from. If you don’t have kids, gardening is a soothing activity and many plants like kale, tomatoes, and several herbs are surprisingly easy to grow. Just don’t forget the sunscreen when working outside. In addition to UV rays from the sun, many plants are photo-allergens, meaning they react with light to cause skin darkening. You don’t want your skin to suffer as you get healthy: slather on your UV protection before you get down and dirty!

Don’t Drink Your Nutrients: Chew ‘Em

Because you need so much fruit and veg to make a single serving, fresh, cold-pressed juices are wonderful to supplement your intake of fruits and vegetables…but sipping shouldn’t replace eating. Chewing through raw, whole fruits and vegetables gives you all the fiber and nutritious benefits that these miracle foods have to offer. Juicing, even at home, can mean getting more sugar and water than anything else. Add, don’t replace.

Stop De-Prioritizing Movement

Don’t make exercise an option, or something to do just a few times a week: make it a daily ritual. Enroll in a class that forces you to do 3 days of more intense work — spinning, aerobics, zumba, bootcamp, whatever you find fun. Do two days of hiking or walking with the kids, the dog or your partner. That leaves two more days of yoga, other classes, the treadmill or even stationary biking while watching your favorite TV shows. Aim for a minimum of 45 minutes no matter what you’re doing. Free apps like Sworkit help you customize workouts according to the time you have — no gym or equipment required. There are loads of free dance and zumba routines on YouTube, too. And if you have a crazy-busy week, try this Heart-Thumping 10-Minute Workout, this 10-Minute Pilates + Barre Workout, or the famous 7-Minute Workout.

Try to be less sedentary in general, too. At work, set an alarm to get up and walk around. Look for opportunities to move more: take the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator, and get off at a stop a few blocks from your normal station so you can walk the rest of the way.

Just getting started? Don’t let the trendiness of ultra-extreme workouts intimidate you. ANY movement is better than none. Especially if you’re not naturally active, prioritize the habit of daily exercise over the actual activity. Set an alarm to make sure you do something — anything…one minute of jumping jacks and some crunches, for example — at the same time every day. At the end of a week, try two minutes of any activity. By the third week, try five minutes (this is where Sworkit comes in handy…you can choose the time you have). Soon enough, you’ll find that getting started won’t be so hard: you’ll have set the habit your mind and body. Keep it up and you’ll start naturally looking for longer or harder exercise routines. The most important thing, however, is that you’ll have made exercise a DAILY habit.

Stop Thinking Sleep Is For The Weak

Prioritize sleep. Your skin and body need it. Sleep helps with learning, stress management, depression, skin, lessening inflammation, even controlling hunger pangs and helping you choose wiser foods to eat.

Less stress, a leaner, stronger physique, and gorgeous, glowing skin…we don’t see the downside, do you?

Get Fresh Tresses For Spring!

Warmer weather means finally freeing hair from the confines of wraps and caps and earmuffs! Not ready for a huge transformation but don’t want to welcome spring by just flinging your woolly beanie into the back of the closet either? We asked Rosie Sumstad of our awesome neighbors at Fringe NY salon for some easy tips to freshen up your tresses this season:

What are some top trends for spring?

To me, spring is always about having a fresh new start. Hair, skincare, clothing — and this year I’m all about clean, minimal and hidden details. A new tone in your hair that can fade out, hidden messages on a piece of jewelry, or a pop of color mixed into your makeup routine!

Can you share some easy tips/how-to’s to recreate some updates at home?

Here’s one of my favorite styling tips for the carefree beach wave:

  1. Once your hair is washed, add a texturizing product. We recommend Evo’s Salty Dog or our very own Fringe & Friends Devoted spray.
  2. Next divide the hair into two sections and twist each section into a taught bun.
  3. Then, let air dry! It’s that easy!

Want to keep the look going for a couple days? Simply blend a bit of product and water in your hands and run through the hair to freshen up and de-frizz!

What are some of the top trends you’re seeing in haircare?

My absolute favorite at-home remedy is coconut oil! For myself and my clients! Before getting in the shower, saturate your ends and let it sit up to an hour. Shampoo twice if the product is sitting on your scalp, and voilà! It adds moisture without being too heavy, seals in any frizz and doesn’t leave you feeling greasy like other oil products.

Trash & Re-Stash: Hypoallergenic Alternatives For Your Entire Medicine Cabinet!

Start from scratch — with hypoallergenic alternatives — to end the scratching!

You Just Got A Patch Test?

Great! Now you know exactly what you need to avoid and are on the road to skin health, clarity, and comfort. But…what’s that? Your patch test shows you’re allergic to ingredients in pretty much everything you use now? You have to throw it all away — all of it…shampoo, cleanser, lotions, makeup — and start from scratch with hypoallergenic alternatives? That can be scary. So can that “naked” feeling of not using anything at all until you find products without your allergens.

Think about it: you have to go without using anything (including, in many cases, antiperspirant and toothpaste) until you find products you can use…and it may have taken you weeks or months to find all the stuff you use now!

Before you resign yourself to Walking Dead chic, try this: ask your doctor about our Allergen-Free Starter Set or pick up our Skin “Detox” Kit. Either covers all your basic needs so you needn’t panic when beginning your hypoallergenic lifestyle. Each formulation has zero of all 76 of the most common allergens (based on over 28,000 patch tests), making them ideal for the majority of allergic, irritated, or hyperreactive skins. Then, use this chart for an easy guide to hypoallergenic alternatives for your medicine cabinet staples. Still reeling from ingredient lists? Contact us for customized recommendations based on your patch test results!

Match what you need to trash with its hypoallergenic alternative. When in doubt, select products with the highest VH-rating (VH-76/76) — which means they have none of all common allergens.

Still unsure? For customized recommendations based on your patch test results, contact us by email, or drop us a private message on Facebook. To shop our selection of hypoallergenic products, visit

Make Up For Past Mistakes

Forget the hot mess that hurt you. This gorgeous is actually good for you!

Tying It “Oil” Together: Our clinically-published, coconut-derived monolaurin is in all VMV Hypoallergenics products. Our blush, eyeshadows and lipsticks have our organic virgin coconut oil, too. Far more than a pretty face, this makeup gives you anti-microbial, anti-aging, skin-strengthening goodness in every swipe.

What Cheek!

Skin Bloom Blush

No dyes or parabens (they cause dark spots and rashes).
No comedogens to prevent acne…instead, monolaurin actively treats it.

Eye Care.

Two True Hues Eyeshadow Duo

The skin around the eyes is pretty thin. In addition to irritations, allergens can stress the skin and hasten aging.

Watch Your Mouth!

Lip Gloss, Velvet Matte Lipstick

Chronically chapped lips are a sign of irritation. Photo-allergens can cause lip darkening. And get this, the right lip products (and toothpaste!) alone can be miraculously effective at clearing up acne, rashes or dark spots around the mouth, or on the chin or jawline.

A Look For The Most Magical Night of The Year

When you need red-carpet glamor, think statement dress (tonight’s the night to take that baby out and show her off) and high-wattage yet elegant makeup. Appropriately dramatic (you don’t want that dress getting all the attention!), this look is confident and glamorous while remaining un-fussy and sleek.

What you’ll need:

Start with your skincare regimen and a rich moisturizer like Creammmy-Rich Intensive Moisture Milk. Dewiness is always lovely, but in the heat of lights or full rooms, it may need some control. Start with Skintangible “BBBB” Cream, which blends into all skin tones, gives skin ultra-light coverage, and maintains your skin’s healthy glow. Follow with Antioxidant 2-Way Powder Foundation whose light-powder-when-dry-to-thicker-foundation-when-wet versatility makes it an ideal option for the modern matte (a healthy-skin, creamy-matte finish)…or just apply lightly to settle makeup and tone down excess shine throughout the night. Use our large Powder/Bronzer Brush to build up application slowly, for excellent control — again you want to see some of that gorgeously moisturized skin come through.

Don’t forget to cover up “quirks in progress” with Skin-The-Bluff Concealer.

Dust Tarte-à-Tan Bronzing “Coco” Powder over face, collarbones, and shoulders. Sculpt cheekbones with Skin Bloom Blush in Chisel. Blend with peach-gold Bellini and add a generous helping of shimmery Luminous on the tops of cheekbones.

Try a different take on the smoky eye with deep metallic shades that are warmer than black but just as intense. We suggest blending the beautifully burnished Bleecker and Morning After palettes (both Two True Hues Eyeshadow Duos). Highlight with Blush in Luminous under brow bones.

Line eyes dramatically — anything from a precise cat eye to slept-in-it smudging, so long as it’s bold. (H)Eyebrow Eye + Brow Liner gives you maximum flexibility: for this look, take the moistened tip of the Eye Definer Brush and dab it onto the darker shade. Trace upper and lower lash lines. Smudge with a dry brush or your fingertip. Take the same moistened brush and re-line top lashes.

For contrast, keep brows softer. Use the lighter shade from (H)ighbrow and our Brow + Lash Groomer to give brows a naturally-feathered yet clean shape in a paler hue. Apply multiple coats of Ooh-La-Lash! Mascara. Don’t worry, it won’t smudge through the evening’s partying or happy tears! 🙂

Give lips a subtle shade but glamorous texture with dazzling Lip Glitter Gloss in Warm Chill.

Keep hair and accessories simple—it’s 100% face time.

Can I Use Jewelry If I Have Sensitive Skin?

The simple answer? Maybe. Gold is an allergen but it’s nickel that’s the real danger for those with contact dermatitis. Nickel isn’t just an allergen or a top allergen…nickel is frequently the number one most common allergen on published allergen lists. It is difficult to find metals without nickel in them — even if you use non-metal jewelry, pay attention to clasps and earring pieces. What helps is if the nickel is bonded extremely well, so that the chances of it rubbing off and causing a reaction are minimized. Because of how difficult it can be, and because hypoallergenic is who we are, we’re always on the lookout for jewelry for those with sensitive skin. We already work with Yciar Castillo for makeup, and were thrilled to learn that she launched a new jewelry line, with skin safety as something that she tries to prioritize!

My grandmother was a woman who loved to accessorize. Growing up, she used to show me her different pieces of jewelry and tell me the stories behind each piece. I was fascinated by every anecdote and the history and provenance of each item. This is where my love affair with jewelry began.

As I grew older, I began developing an interest in semi-precious stones. My cousins and I knew exactly what our birthstones were and the properties that came with each. So it was no surprise that when I decided to choose a hobby and study again, I chose to take a short course in metalsmithing and jewelrymaking.

Being a makeup artist by profession, I am very conscious of how skin can react to anything that it comes in contact with, from our skincare and cosmetic products, to the detergents we use on our clothing, the fabrics our clothes are made of, and the materials and metals used in the accessories we wear. When I started making my pieces, I was lucky a friend of mine helped me test my gold earrings and gave me a lot feedback. Another friend also brought my handmade silver earrings to a dermatologist who performed a nickel test with a special solution. Nickel is a metal that is found and used in a lot of costume jewellery. It is the most common cause of allergic contact dermatitis in adults. My jewelry tested negative for nickel. This gave me the assurance that my pieces are safe for many people with sensitive skin.

I love being creative and working with my hands. I started making jewelry as something to do part time, I post my pieces on Instagram and have called my jewelry Quinntas – after my son, Quinn.

For best results: if you think you might have contact dermatitis, ask your dermatologist for a patch test.

The ONE Look — Party After Party, Photo After Photo — You’ll Need This Holiday Season

by Jess Arnaudin

Picture Perfect

100 Parties, A Million Photos, ONE LOOK. Rushing from a full day at work to the office party, then a family dinner and your BFF’s big bash? Who has time to change outfits or makeup? You want one look that works for any affair and that photographs beautifully, reliably. Because you can’t get much past a camera these days — even smart phones have great resolution! — make sure your makeup is high-def ready with these simple yet effective tips.

Shades can vary depending on your skin tone and preferences, but follow these basics and you’ll be glowing in person and online, no matter the lighting (or the state of the evening)!

  1. Light foundation and radiant skin: keep you from looking tired…
  2. Dramatic lines: for photos, eyes need definition, definition, definition….
  3. Bright colors: are kryptonite against a camera’s tendency to wash out and flatten.

Heavy, complex foundation can be harder to make work with different types of lighting, and get blotchy or dull as your skin tires. Try this all-night technique: target imperfections with Skin-The-Bluff Concealer then even out your skin tone with Skintangible BBBB Cream, which keeps the look fresh. Highlight with Skin Bloom Blush in Luminous for dewy skin that also emphasizes contours and lets light bounce off beautifully in photos (check out highlighting tips here). Finish with Illuminants Brilliant Finish Powder-Foundation because lights, heat, nerves (or a cute new acquaintance) can lead to sweat and too much shine. Don’t forget to take your concealer and powder with you for easy touch-ups from party to party.

This technique looks fresh and natural in brightly-lit videos…

…and warm and glowy in late-night, low-light photos.

Line up and lash out! The key to definition in any photo: bold eyes and brows. Fill in and shape brows architecturally. Least likely to fade, they’ll ensure definition even in low-light conditions. Winged liner makes eyes look bigger and builds depth — try (H)ighbrow Eye & Brow Liner on the insides of the lash line then above it, working upwards and outwards. Lots of lashes are key: thank you, Ooh-La-Lash Mascara! Use a lash curler for an even more bright-eyed appearance…necessary with so many late nights in a row.

Go bright, or go home. Cameras tend to wash out and flatten…and you’re not always in control of the filter. Adding drama to eyes and lips ensures your features’ prominence. Try the Two True Hues Eyeshadow Duo in Dallas (a warm copper-coral mix) or Bleecker (metallic rose gold and deep wine). On lips, brights like Beet It and Copa are brilliant buildable options: dot on lightly for a sweet, subtle stain (as I did with CC, above, for her TV appearance); layer on (and top with The Big, Brave Boo-Boo Balm!) for more glamor (on Kristen, above; and Tina and Mireya, top). Contour cheeks with Skin Bloom Blush in Chisel; blend well and follow with a bright pink like Georgia or toasty Heat so you’re peppy and glowing in photos no matter how late it is!

#NoFilter: A Tried-&-True Foundation Routine For Picture-Perfect Skin

By Morgan DeTienne

Between being tagged in photos on Facebook, posting your newest selfie on Instagram and uploading a new professional profile pic on LinkedIn, there is no shortage of self-portraits floating around the Internet. Photos are the new way to introduce yourself to the world, and healthy, flawless skin says a thousand words! A gorgeous picture begins with gorgeous skin, so I’ve laid out my foundation routine for taking an Insta-worthy picture…so you can put your best face forward.

1. Avoid shine by starting out on clean skin with the Fine Finish Pore Minimizing Skin Mattifier. Almost instantly you can feel your pores tightening and the oil on the surface of your skin disappearing. It also works wonderfully as a primer! Wait five minutes before continuing so it can take full effect.

2. Use your favorite shade of the Skin-The-Bluff corrector under the eye and on the eyelid all the way to the brow. This corrector works really well as an eye shadow primer and helps when you want to build color depth, as well as covering up those blue undertones around the corners of the eye.

3. It’s sometimes difficult to find a foundation that is exactly your skin tone. If you’re like me, create your customized color by mixing two shades of the Skin Savvy Foundation. I’m quite pale, which can cause me to appear “washed out” in photos, especially when the flash is being used. I love the N1 shade for all around coverage, and then add half a pump of the N2 shade to add a little tan while still matching the color of my neck.

4. Layer a small amount of the Skintangible “BBBB Cream” Non-Makeup on top to create a perfect dewy finish. I like to use my fingers to apply Skintangible so it blends easily into the Skin Savvy Foundation.

5. If you are still feeling shiny, brush a little powder foundation on the top. Layering Antioxidant Powder Foundation on top of the creamy liquid foundation does wonders for those oily trouble spots.

Now you’re ready for your close-up, gorgeous.
