Skinthusiast Mariza Hourani: My Life Has Been a Fairytale :)

Did you know that most VMV Hypoallergenics models are family members, good friends, work colleagues and real fans of the brand?

Meet Mariza Hourani, a Lebanese-British-Spanish-Philippine stunner who’s also my longtime bootcamp trainer’s daughter. Her dad’s seen me balloon through pregnancies and work myself to a purple-faced mess to get fit again. He trained my dad through his recovery from stem cell transplants and chemo, and still trains my energizer-bunny of a mother in her 70s. Mariza’s mother is one of the nicest, most creative women I know and does pretty much all my kids’ birthday parties plus crazy-good, crazy-healthy eggplant salads and hummus.

We’ve been friends, is what I’m saying, and I’ve been witness — often through stories shared mid bootcamp (usually when her dad’s trying to distract me from my lack of oxygen) — to Mariza’s growing up.

Mariza was also my now-3yo son’s first crush. The photo below shows him at a few months old clinging to her. Seriously, this continued a good, long time. He refused to be removed from this happy hugging. And who can blame him?

image

LAURA: Your dad’s punished me for years and I still remember our first workouts. When did you first “meet” VMV?

MARIZA: VMV has been a part of my life since I was a kid as I had very sensitive skin growing up and most other brands didn’t have anything hypoallergenic! I used to have the worst lip problems — I couldn’t even smile without them bleeding. Without VMV, I really don’t know how different my life would be.

L: Ouch (the bleeding) but nice to hear (that we could help 🙂 What are your biggest skin concerns or skin goals?

M: As a  model, I’m always concerned about my complexion. I do have to be in makeup quite a lot so it’s the biggest relief to be able to use VMV products that don’t make me break out! I think my biggest skin goal would be to stay as youthful as can be for as long as possible. My career kind of depends on it, ha ha!

L: We can help there, too, I’m sure. Which VMV products do you use?

….. What don’t I use?

L: Ok, which would you consider your faves?

M: I’m white as a snowball. It’s so bad that I’ve used the lightest shades of other makeup lines as BRONZERS. That being said, hands down my favorites are the Skin Savvy Foundation and Illuminants Powder — you actually have my shade!!

L: What do you like about this very bare, very natural look for spring?

M: I’ll correct you right now and point out that I not only like it, I LOVE IT. So many people have the wrong idea about makeup; it’s not supposed to cover up your features, it’s supposed to enhance them. That’s exactly what this look is all about. I feel so preeeeetty

L: I stand happily corrected. And for days when a bare look just won’t cut it, what makeup looks get you jazzed?

M: I’ve always been into the pin-up look. Sexy, classy and timeless all in one.

L: Taking note of that for a future shoot. How would you describe your personal style?

M: Can we skip this question? #identitycrisis

L: Wait till you’re in your 40s. How do you keep as fit as you are?

M: I’m fit?? Hahaha! I try my best to get a jog in whenever I’m not busy with work 🙂

L: What’s your favorite activity to keep healthy?

M: Sleeping. Hands down. You’d be suprised how crucial things like this actually are until you’ve been deprived of them.

L: Totally agree with you. Didn’t think of sleep as an activity until my first experience with a newborn. What’s it like having a trainer for a dad?

M: I would be nowhere in my career without him. He’s been my biggest supporter and closest friend. Friends fight, A LOT, but it’s nothing a few burpees won’t fix.

L: Your dad and those #)*$& burpees. What was it like growing up in your family?

My life has been a fairytale 🙂

L: Those words, just like that, are what I’d love to hear my kids say some day.

Do you have any tips for fans out there for fitness, sun protection and/or training?
My recommendation is to train as organically as possible — the less linear or less machines, and the more outdoors, the better. Improve your food and and take care to protect yourself against sun exposure. It is about feeling better but also about being green, natural, in every way.

Cajai Fellows Johnson, Professional Dancer

Cajai Fellows Johnson

Professional Dancer
New York

“Dance saves.” Small wonder we, whose purpose is to save the world’s skin, fell in love with this powerful — and empowering — multitalented artist!

Cajai Fellows Johnson formally started performing on stage at 9 years old and grew up falling in love with the art form of dance. When your mother is the director of dance for a state university, you grow up with a deeply rooted appreciation for the dance world. She continues to immerse herself in all forms of art and shares how dance has become her career, her therapy, her passion.

Follow Cajai for inspired training, beautiful art, and serious motivation!

 @Cajmahal

 Cajai Fellows Johnson

How long have you been a professional dancer?
I started working professionally in musical theater when I was 9 and specifically as a dancer when I was 22.

Why do you do it?
For me, dance saves. I mean that in a very literal sense. There is something about moving to music, whether I am performing at Lincoln Center or just grooving at a concert with friends, that makes everything ok. It’s a career, it’s therapy and it’s my passion.

How did you get started?
My mother is the director of dance at Central Connecticut State University for more than 40 years. So I grew up in the dance world.

What made you interested in dancing?
As I mentioned above, I grew up in dance and performance.  So I would watch these incredible humans rehearse and perform and I so attracted to the lifestyle and community.  I knew I wanted to be as physically beautiful as them but more importantly I wanted to inspire young dancers the way those dancers inspired me.

How do you train for it?
So. Many. Ways. Haha.  Maintaining a physically fit body so you are ready to perform at a moment’s notice, is a full time job.  I still take as many dance classes as I can get my hands on, sometimes up to 3 a day, which is including but not limited to ballet, jazz, and theater. I also do yoga which, as I get older, am finding is hugely important to keep my body safe and feeling good.  A lot of my close friends are fitness instructors so sometimes I drop into their classes.

I also expose myself to as much to the art world as possible. I go see shows. I collaborate with fellow artists. Things like that.

What are your favorite VMV products and why do you like using them?
I love love love the Illuminants+ Cream.  I deal with a lot of dryness and uneven skin tone and this moisturizer balances and hydrates making your skin look like its actually glowing.

Eye cream is also super important and VMV has a great one called Re-Everything Eye Serum.

What was your most memorable moment dancing?
Recently, it was a specific moment during one of my first times on the Metropolitan Opera stage.  There was a moment in the show when I was front and center, on my own, and had to do a double pirouette (a turn) into a grand jeté (a jump), in a very heavy dress and wig, I might add, and I remember nailing it! I felt such genuine happiness looking out into this massive audience, on a stage I had always dreamed of performing on and thought, “This moment is worth all the literal blood, sweat and tears.”

You feel prettiest when….
When I leave a really awesome dance class or workout! I sweat a lot and am usually drenched but I almost always leave smiling and laughing.

How do you want to be known as?
I want to be a leader who empowers people to live out their passions. That might be as big as finishing a degree or the small stuff, like seeing your favorite band.  I want people to look to me and believe they can also find happiness through hard work and compassion.

Do you have any tips for fans out there for fitness, skincare and/or training, etc?
It is important to get other people’s opinions, whether it is career advice or how to do your makeup, but always follow what is truest to yourself and what makes you happy as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone. Everyone will always have an opinion. Take what makes sense to you and leave the rest behind.

What inspires your art?
At its core, humans inspire my art.  When I paint or draw, I draw bodies.  When I see someone else dancing with passion, it instantly makes me want to dance!

What’s your daily skin care regimen and/or Make up?
I keep it super simple. I use sunscreen on my face in the morning and mascara and a tinted, moisturizing lipstick. In the evening, I cleanse with something gentle and do an evening moisturizer!

She won Young Dressage Rider of the year in 2017 at the Manila Polo Club, and Young Dressage Rider of the year in 2018 at Aralea. She also won Young Show Jumper of the year as part of the Red Diamond Horse Show in the USA. Her love for horses began from watching her sister ride at a younger age; it has since grown into a passion. Being under the sun all day.

nicole_vjc

What made you want to ride?
Watching my sister Alessandra ride when I was younger.

Why do you like using Armada as a sunscreen?
I like using Armada sunscreen because it really prevents you from getting burnt from the sun but also is very light on the skin. I have very sensitive skin and when I use Armada I don’t get rashes or get red, which is really good!

What was your most memorable moment in competition?
My most memorable moment in every competition is when you feel great after you get over every jump in the course…the feeling when you’re flying over every jump.

You feel happiest when…
I feel the happiest when I see my horses! And when I’m at the beach.

Do you have any tips for fans out there for fitness, sun protection, and/or training?
A good tip for sun protection is to always reapply apply after swimming, sweating a lot, or just in general when it comes off. But the protection of Armada is amazing…I never get sunburned!

Lorena Perez, Dancer

Lorena Perez

Dancer, Educator, Choreographer
Costa Rica

Lorena Perez formally started dancing at 5 years old and has been in love with dance since then. She is currently pursuing her Masters in Fine Arts in Dance at NYU Tisch School of the Arts to fulfill her dream of becoming a professional dancer. Lore’s philosophy: “Once you become fearless, life becomes limitless.”

Follow Lore and her learn more about her fearless life!

  Lore Perez

 Lore Perez

How long have you been dancing?

While I completed my undergraduate degree in business, my true passion lies in dance, an art in which I have been engaged for as long as I can remember. I think I have been dancing since I was inside my mother’s womb. Actually, I cannot recall a moment in my life in which I wasn’t instantly moved by music or any type of rhythm. It’s interesting though, since my mother didn’t enjoy her ballet lessons as a child, she promised herself she would never force any of her children into dance lessons. Little did she know she would have a daughter that, by choice, would devote her life completely to this art form. All my childhood videos demonstrate the love I’ve had for dance since my early steps, but I began my first formal dance lessons at the age of 5. I’ve been in love with it since then and I know I always will. This is the reason why I chose to do it professionally and why I am currently pursuing my Masters in Fine Arts in Dance at NYU Tisch School of the Arts.

Why do you dance?

I dance because every cell in my body asks me to do so. It’s as if I need to dance in order to feel complete and alive. Dance feels completely innate and in a way, addictive. I usually can’t hold myself back and start dancing in any public space, supermarket hallway or even while I’m eating. When I’m dancing it just feels right, as if I was brought into this world to do this.

How do you train?

As dancers, we push ourselves physically and mentally, and we have to be willing to make sacrifices in order to succeed. I dance around 6 hours a day including technique classes and rehearsals. Usually, rehearsals can go late into the evening or even happen on weekends. It requires discipline, constancy and determination, but I believe an outstanding dancer loves this art form more than anything in this world.

“What is your favorite VMV product?”

I’ve always had sensitive skin and VMV has been the perfect solution. Once I moved to New York I have had to deal with a much drier climate than in my native country, Costa Rica. Thankfully, VMV products, such as the hand and body smoother, have been there for me and have made it possible for my skin to be nurtured and healthy. The VMV product that I wouldn’t change for anything else in the world would be the antiperspirant. I am allergic to most deodorants and VMV antiperspirant is the one product that doesn’t make my skin break out into a rash. Not only is this a good way of preventing odor and controlling the sweat from my daily physical activity, but it keeps my skin safe and fresh.

Dancer Tip: Spray some VMV antiperspirant into your dance shoes to keep them fresh and dry and to prevent any possible odor!

What was your most memorable moment in dance?

My most memorable moment in dance was the day I performed for the first time at the Beacon Theater in New York. I looked into the audience, while standing in my starting pose, I felt the heat of the lights and thought to myself: this is where I belong.

You feel happiest when…

I feel the happiest when I am onstage or when I lose myself in movement while improvising. People usually ask me what it is that I think of when I’m performing. I usually don’t think too much, I feel. However, while performing, I always get this immense sensation of gratefulness for being able to dedicate my life to this passion. Truthfully though, my love of dance is not just when I am performing on stage, but also when I work tirelessly to refine my own skills and teach others to do the same. For me, teaching dance allows one to impart knowledge, inspire others and ultimately change lives.

Do you have any tips for fans out there for fitness, sun protection and/or training?

My advice for dancers and everyone in general is to be fearless.

One of my favorite quotes is: “Once you become fearless, life becomes limitless.” Taking chances and stopping being afraid of things will only open more doors and opportunities for us. Regarding sun protection, I would say the younger we start, the smarter we are. And dancers: let your skin be always healthy and audition-ready!

How long have you been hosting? Acting?
Started acting when I was 7 🙂 Hosting stint started 2012 🙂

How did you get started?
It all started when I joined Little Miss Philippines 1990. I only made it to top 5. Everything else was history.

What got you interested in hosting/acting?
I always wanted to be an actress from the moment I gained consciousness in this world. It’s been a dream since I was a little girl. The hosting stint, I didn’t see coming 🙂 They got me as one of the hosts of Mars and that came as a surprise as I hadn’t done a hosting job ever in my life. 🙂
Mars is a weekday primetime offering on the GMA News TV. It gives viewers fresh, fun, and intelligent conversation for and by mommies.

Mars

How do you harness your craft?
With acting, I try to watch as many movies as I can, especially Oscar-nominated ones, and observe them. It’s continuous learning. You continue exploring different levels, and hopefully get to apply them at work. With hosting, regularly practice speaking and read current events and news so that I know what to say when certain topics are brought up.

What was your most memorable moment in hosting/acting?
Almost all projects have left good memories with me 🙂

What are your favorite VMV products and why do you like using them?
CamillePrats-fitness
Monolaurin Gel – dries up unwanted acne quickly and prevents new ones from coming out. 🙂 I loooove it! I easily break out because I wear makeup almost everyday. 🙂
Superskin Spring Set – This trio makes having oily skin manageable, and there is nothing better than that. 🙂
Essence Superwash – my must-have especially when traveling! Having sensitive skin makes my back sensitive to breakouts, especially when I use certain shampoos. I used to wash my hair head down to prevent water from dripping onto my back…now I don’t ever have to worry about that!
Armada Sunblock – I never leave the house without it especially for my son — he plays soccer and sunblock is a must.

You feel prettiest when….
I feel like my skin looks and feels great.

CamillePrats-selfie

How do you want to be known as?
An actress and a host who is not all about fashion, beauty and skills, but someone who has substance as a person. In this crazy world of showbiz where not everyone is real, I want to be known as someone who is genuine and sincere in what I do and to people I meet.

Do you have any tips for fans out there for fitness and sun protection?
Fitness is a lifestyle, its not a one thing you do whenever you feel like it. It becomes a huge part of your life. For sun protection: I didn’t know how important it was to protect your skin from the sun until later on. So start young, start early. 🙂

Julia Nebrija, Urban Planner

Julia Nebrija

urban planner
Manila, Philippines

VBA-JuliaNebrija-1

Julia is Filipino-American urban planner who is passionate about people-friendly cities. She is the Chair of the Inclusive Mobility Network, an organization working to re-shape the metro’s transport system to benefit all, and the Executive Director of Viva Manila, an arts and cultural initiative to revive old neighborhoods. Through both she gets to do what she loves most —bike around the city and build creative communities!

Chat with Julia about biking, sustainability, inclusive mobility, and how to keep fresh while on the road!

   julia.nebrija

   julia_nebrija

 julianebrija

How long have you been biking?
I started biking when I was a kid. I’ve always associated it with a sense of freedom. Biking to school, to a friend’s house, to my dance class or softball game, I didn’t have to depend on my parents or the bus for transportation. Later when I lived in Washington, DC and New York City, I would use my bicycle as a cheap, fast way to get around, but I never used my bicycle as often as I do now living in Manila, which is surprising to most people.

VBA-JuliaNebrija-3

How did you start biking as a form of regular city transit?
I didn’t imagine it would be possible to use a bicycle as a primary form of transportation in Manila. When I first moved here, I was intimidated to try it because of the traffic, pollution, and lack of road rules. I joined Manila Fixed Gear and my friend helped me buy a used bike. I learned the routes and gained the confidence during the group rides to try commuting on my own. Turns out that Metro Manila is actually an ideal city for biking. The roads are flat, there are short distances between places of interest, and aside from the main thoroughfares traffic is slow moving. Although cars, buses, and jeeps are the kings of the road right now, there are so many types of vehicles on the road and so much activity happening along the streets, I find that people are generally aware of what’s going on around them; I don’t feel totally ignored on a bicycle.
VBA-JuliaNebrija-4
What has been your most memorable moment so far?
In February of 2016, I biked all 17 LGUs (Local Government Units; how municipalities are organized in the city) of Metro Manila. I realized during that trip how many people are already biking in the city. Especially when you get out of the CBDs (Central Business Districts), into the barangays (“barrios,” villages), most households have a bicycle which is used to go to the palengke (wet market), basketball court, to transport goods, for vending or to bring children to school. I met security guards and construction workers who use bicycles daily to get from their homes in Laguna or Antipolo to their jobs in Taguig or Makati. The recreational bikers and organized bike groups in the city are very visible, but there’s a whole undocumented sector of the population that uses bicycles as their main form of transportation. It makes sense; there’s no gas or parking fees. Bicycles are a great equalizer and that’s what motivates me to push for a city where using a bicycle is not a statement but an enjoyable, effective way to move around.

VBA-JuliaNebrija-5
To do that we need to work on making roads safer for people who bike, through protected bike lanes, better education for all road users, and better infrastructure such as bike racks and street lighting. It’s really difficult to bike in the rain and I’m still not sure the best way to go about that other than wearing protective gear. To address the pollution we need to focus on enforcing the Clean Air Act. We can combat the heat with more tree plantings along roads to provide shade.

What’s your favorite VMV Product?
I use Armada Sunscreen daily to make sure I’m protecting my skin. The sunscreen also creates a layer between my skin and the pollutants which otherwise clog my pores and even give me skin rashes. I have a lot of allergies to pollution; after my showers I use the Essence Skin-Saving Hand + Body Smoother lotion keep my skin healthy from the daily stresses of being out in the polluted environment.
VBA-JuliaNebrija-6
Do you have any tips for people out there who want to be more responsible commuters?
People commonly ask me how I keep “fresh” while biking, especially to work or social events. I try to wear clothes that are made of breathable materials and dark colors to prevent sweat marks. I sometimes wear a tank top while biking and then change into a dress shirt once I arrive at my destination. I also carry either towelettes or a small bottle of liquid soap to wash my face. I apply make-up after arriving. It also helps to carry a spray of some sort, like a perfume. I keep a travel-sized container of sunscreen to reapply when I have multiple destinations. It’s great when someone compliments me on my appearance and is then shocked to find out I arrived by foot or bicycle.
VBA-JuliaNebrija-7
 You feel best when….
I want to show that sustainable transportation is not just good for the environment and for the city, but for our own well-being and self-esteem. I feel empowered when I can move myself on foot or on a bicycle in a way that I cannot sitting in a car in traffic. I feel healthy, happy, and productive when I’m in control of my own movement — what’s more attractive than that?

Tor Torre, Makeup Artist

Tor Torre

makeup artist
Manila, Philippines

TorTorrewPup

Tor Torre is a premiere makeup artist based in Manila. Initially trained at the London Academy of Radio Film and TV, his professional career has led him to work on fashion shows in Manila and brought him all over the South East Asian region doing TV commercials. In 2012, he sought further studies at Makeup Designory in SoHo, New York, and upon returning to the Philippines continued an independent practice. Today, he leads his own artistic team, FACE the studio, and continues to regularly handle talk-show host, Suzi Entrata-Abrera.  Tor is also a founding partner of ILAYA heritage farms, an organic pig farming project in the island of Marinduque, Philippines (isn’t that just wonderful?). On the side, Tor enjoys backpacking when bitten by the travel bug.

We’ve worked with Tor quite a bit for VMV Hypoallergenics shoots…and his artistry is only one reason. He’s an incredibly nice, kindhearted person. His empathy permeates the set. You’ll see his beautiful work in many of our ads and images…what you may not know is how instrumental his calm, positive energy is in every shot 🙂 #goodnessbegetsgoodness

Check out Tor’s blog for great tips on skincare and makeup, and follow him on Instagram for his beautiful travel photos and cool videos of skincare application tips!

How long have you been a makeup artist?

I have been working professionally as a makeup artist since 2007. When I first started, I was lucky enough to have been a part of a makeup artistic team that did fashion shows for top Filipino and world-renowned designers; Inno Sotto, Josie Natori, BENCH, Cary Santiago and Michael Cinco just to name a few. That was good training ground for me. Over the years, I have managed to work mostly in various TV commercial productions throughout the Southeast Asian region and on a few magazine shows in a local network in the Philippines. It has been an interesting journey.

How did you get started?

My first experience with makeup was when I was in college. I was 18 years old. Circumstances in life lead me to join gay beauty pageants in Cebu City. I didn’t do my makeup then. Roel used to paint my face all the time. With my eyes closed and through the sense of touch, I would take mental notes when a particular brush would touch a particular part of my face. Based on that and being a Fine Arts student, I quickly learned the art and started doing it on my own.  Years later, I moved to Manila and worked for an advertising agency.

It was Halloween. My partner, Cholo, saw me applying makeup on one of our girls at home; she wanted to be a Gothic Witch when she goes Trick-or-treating. Once I was finished, he told me, “You know, you can become a makeup artist here.” I was a bit apprehensive at first. I had just moved from Cebu and being a makeup artist wasn’t really considered a  “JOB.” Being a filmmaker, Cholo brought me to a shoot one day. The makeup department was kind enough to let me hang around. While I was observing the shoot, a voice in my head said, “You can do this!” So, I saved up for a year; sold my computer, my webcam, even my vacuum cleaner! At 25, I packed my bags, left for London and studied a course on makeup for film and TV at the London Academy of Radio Film and TV (now the London Academy of Media Film and Television). A few days after I got back from London, I was hired to shoot a commercial for a beauty product in Vietnam. As the cliché goes, the rest is history.

Why do you do it?

I love the fact that I can transform women, to lead them to understand and appreciate their own beauty. And that is a good thing. I also enjoy the fact that every single work day for me is a different experience. I get to meet different people and I get to learn many things from them. I have realized over time, people (especially women), have their own notion of their own beauty; and it’s always best to work around those parameters. After all what is important is that you make them feel good about themselves.

What was your most memorable moment doing makeup?

When I had the chance to do Margie Moran, Miss Universe 1973. In 2010, I was working for magazine show and my assigned host was late because she was stuck in traffic. Everybody was stuck in traffic including the makeup artist who was assigned to do makeup on the guests. Our producer comes to me and says, “Tor, Margie is here. Can you do her makeup?” When I turned around to see who “Margie” was, I gasped. It was THE Margie Moran. To this day, I cannot tell you how I managed to keep my composure the entire time and refrained myself from “geeking out” all over her. After I did her makeup, she gave me her approval and thanked me. I remember bowing my head and saying something about how grateful I was to have had done her makeup. She then walked to the set to be briefed. When she was out of earshot, I remembered exclaiming “Oh my God! That was Margie Moran!” and everybody in the makeup room started laughing at me because they didn’t realized how nervous I was up until that moment. I should have asked to have my photo taken with her!

What is your favorite VMV Product?
My all time favorite VMV product is the Re-Everything Eye Serum. It’s the only under eye serum in the market today that doesn’t give me milia. I have one in my bathroom counter, I have one in my toiletry kit and I have one in my makeup kit.

You feel prettiest when…
I’m in drag! (laughs)

Do you have any tips for makeup artistry fans out there?

This is what I told my students when I had a teaching gig a few years back:

  • Makeup artistry is a service-oriented job, if you do not understand the paradigm of service, then this is not for you.
  • DO NOT BE LATE.
  • Always be professional in everything that you do.
  • Practice what you preach. If you tell your clients to cleanse, tone, moisturize and use sunscreen, you should do it as well.
  • ALWAYS clean your tools. Disinfect your products regularly.
  • Express your artistry at the right time, at the right place and with the right client.  Always remember that your goal in not to show them how good a makeup artist you are but to let them feel good about themselves at the end of a makeup session.
  • Be nice to people, it goes a long way.

What is your daily skin care regimen?

Out of habit, I always start my mornings cleansing my skin with VMV Hydra Balance Smart Gentle Cream Cleanser.

I tone my skin with Superskin 3 Toner.

I then apply Re-Everything Eye Serum in my under eye area, and treat certain spots like my laugh lines around my lips and forehead.

I finish up my skin care routine by applying VMV Hydra Balance Smart Moisturizer.

On a side note: if my day requires me to be under the sun or under the harsh lights of the studio, I apply a generous amount of Armada Sport in SPF 70. If not, I skip it.

For evenings:

I cleanse my skin again with with VMV Hydra Balance Smart Gentle Cream Cleanser to remove the dirt accumulated during the day.

I tone my skin again with Superskin 3 Toner.

I apply Re-Everything Eye Serum again at the same spots I like to treat.

I then finish is off with  VMV Re-Everything Cream so my skin can renew and regenerate while I sleep.

How long have you been surfing?
My first surf lesons were in La Union in 2002! So 13 years.

Elaine Abonal - Siargao 2013

Why do you do it?
I do it because it has become such an integral part of my life. It is my exercise, my alone time, my meditation, my job. I love it so much and I can’t imagine my life without it!

Why do so many fall in love with surfing?
I learn something new every time I go surfing. I wouldn’t be the person I am today if it weren’t for it. There’s knowing your limits but not being afraid to push yourself; realizing that it’s great to have a good ride, but it takes more to appreciate, even enjoy, getting back up after a big wipe out. I learn a lot about people; age differences disappear and languages become insignificant. You see that it doesn’t matter who you are, where you come from, or how much money you make. You respect each other’s differences and share a common passion for being in the water that called to you.

Instagram-ElaineAbonal-FloatingEmeraldWaterCorals-20150804

How do you train for it?
Surfing is a very physical sport. I eat healthy, surf as much as I can (daily if possible), do yoga so that I’m flexible, and get enough sleep.

How did you get started?
I was in Florida in high school and saw surfers and the whole surfing lifestyle. As soon as I got back home to the Philippines, I researched about surfing lessons, went on a trip with 4 boys (I was the only girl) and never stopped since!

You talk a lot about safety…

Surfing is not as hard as it seems but it’s not as easy as it looks either. Never underestimate the power of the ocean. Conditions change every day, every hour. It’s important to respect the ocean and know our limits. As surfers, we’re not only dealing with ourselves out there but also other people and their surfboards. Knowing basic safety is to protect others as much as ourselves.

Safety is so important. Surfista Travels organizes everything (transportation, accommodation and lessons) for people who want a safe and worry-free trip to the best surf spots. And this includes sun safety. Staying protected from the sun is a real concern because I live and breathe surfing. My lifestyle and job means that I am in the water and under the sun a LOT and at different times of the day. I try to avoid peak UVB hours but sometimes waves are too good to miss, or surf lessons get extended. I wear rash guards but my face, legs, and hands are still exposed. I make it a point to slather on sunscreen repeatedly and remind Surfistas to do the same!

Armada-SurfistaGift-InskinJunAug2014-20140310

Why do you like using Armada Sport as a sunscreen?

Armada‘s my favorite, I can rely on it to protect my skin while not having it get in the way of what I do. I love that it’s not sticky or thick. It doesn’t feel hot even if I’m not yet in the water. I won it in a surfing association’s raffle once, and all the surfers there said it was the BEST sunscreen ever, so I started using it. It’s been in my beach bag since.

I LOVE Armada Sport because of many reasons! It’s not sticky or heavy when applied so it’s not uncomfortable on my skin. It’s the only sunscreen that I’ve ever used that doesn’t only protect me from the sun but helps IMPROVE my skin condition at the same time. I had skin problems where my skin tone became uneven and I couldn’t be under the sun and my skin was too sensitive for other sunscreens. Ever since I started using Armada Sport it has slowly been healing!

What was your most memorable moment in surfing?
I can’t think of one particular moment since I’ve been doing it forever. It’s more like a mix of different moments that I treasure – surfing in beautiful conditions during sunrise or sunset with my good friends and good vibes and lots of laughter in the water, with a rainbow in the background for example – those are moments that I treasure the most!

You feel prettiest when…

My skin is SUCH a big part of who I am because it represents two major things about me — being a surfer and being Filipina. I always get complimented on my skin tone wherever I go in the world. 🙂

I feel prettiest when I am in my bikini, with no make up, barefoot and with a flower in my hair – AND surrounded by people who I love and love me just as I am!

Do you have any tips for fans out there for fitness, sun protection and/or training?
Always put VMV Armada Sport 70 sunscreen – ALWAYS – whether you’ll only be out in the sun for 15 minutes or an hour, eat healthy because anything that you put in your body will be your fuel, do something active everyday. It takes WORK to be fit, it doesn’t come from just looking at pictures. Also don’t forget to RELAX & HAVE FUN!

Skinthus-ArmadaSport-SurfistaFB-StokedWahineClassic7Oct2013-20130907

What’s your daily skin care and/or makeup?
I only use VMV Hypoallergenics products. I don’t use so much makeup on the island, except for blush and Ooh-La-Lash!. I pretty much use VMV Armada Sport sunscreen as soon as I get out of my room during the day. At night, I always wash my face & moisturize. I’m under the sun and in a lot of extreme conditions so it’s good to have a daily skin regimen.
