How long have you been playing soccer?
Desde que tenía 5 años de edad.
Since I was 5 years old.

Why do you do it?
Soy apasionado del deporte en general. Me gusta aprender todos los estilos y deportes, y me gusta ayudar a la gente y aprender y conseguir cosas nuevas.
I am passionate about sport in general. I like learning all styles of sport, and I like helping people discover new things.

How do you train for it?
3 horas al día en diferentes tipos de sesiones: calistenia, movimiento, artes marciales, etc.
3 hours daily with different types of sessions: calisthenics, movement, martial arts, etc.

 

 

How did you get started?
Empecé a los 5 años de edad. Iba a jugar futbol soccer dos veces a la semana, gimnasia olímpica, y natación además de los fines de semana con mis padres realizaba calistenia.
I started at age 5. I played soccer twice a week, gymnastics, and swimming and calisthenics on weekends with my parents.

Why do you like using Armada as a sunscreen?
Me gusta usar el Protector Solar Armada porque siempre estoy expuesto muchas horas de sol y cuida mi piel, no entra en mis ojos y me encanta la consistencia.

What was your most memorable moment in playing soccer?
Mi debut profesional en la primera división en México.
My professional debut in first division in Mexico.

Cuando estoy en medio de la naturaleza abriendo mi camino, descubriendo nuevas formas, nuevos desafíos y diferentes experiencias.
When I am in the midst of nature opening new paths, discovering new forms, new challenges and different experiences.

Do you have any tips for fans out there for fitness, sun protection and/or training?
Mi recomendación es entrenar lo más orgánico posible, entre menos lineal, menos máquinas y más al aire libre, mejor. Que mejoren su comida y que cuiden del sol si van a estar expuestos. Se trata de sentirse mejor pero también de ser verde en todos los sentidos.
My recommendation is to train as organically as possible — the less linear or less machines, and the more outdoors, the better. Improve your food and and take care to protect yourself against sun exposure. It is about feeling better but also about being green, natural, in every way.

This Dad Uses Health & Fitness To Bond With Family

Sports run in our family. 

Although many comment from the sidelines and think we are absolutely crazy because of what we do, we think ours is a super healthy dose of life!

With the kind of sports we do — gymnastics, swimming, triathlon, cycling, running, football and more — you can imagine what our home looks like. Water bottles everywhere, stretching aids, bosu balls, swiss balls, kettle bells, elastic bands, bikes, goggles, cycling shoes, helmets, wheels, sunscreen, nutritional supplements, running shoes (they line our floor everywhere: Nike, Saucony, Newton, Brooks, Hoka Hoka One…we are like the United Nations of running shoes!) Our washing machine operates on overtime 24/7 to keep up with the demands of our daily lives. Alone we couldn’t do it. We have a team for: logistics, nutrition/chef, talent manager (wife/mother), physio therapist, Masseur, Ironman training coach (online from Vancouver). Together, they make our lives much easier.

All this started approximately 8 years ago and has since become an addiction and part of our daily routine. Luckily, it is an addiction worth keeping.

As in most families, kids can pick up their parents’ habits. In our humble abode, it was no different. Ariel, who is turning 11 this year, took on the best habits of both mother and father.

A daredevil on her own, swimming became her sport from an early age. People recognized her ability and dolphin style…we couldn’t get her out of the water. We then introduced her to competition and she never looked back!

Our motto is to enjoy what you do to the fullest.

Results will come on their own. Apply yourself 100% in everything that you do. Results speak louder than words. Winning is the outcome of a well-executed training plan.

As a father who eats, breathes and sleeps the endurance sport of triathlon, I mentor Ariel whenever possible on the rigors of hard work, and the commitment and determination required to compete at a high level. Seeing her athletic development, her mental strength, and her confidence gives me tremendous satisfaction and provides me with a certain level of reassurance that we, as a TEAM, have chosen the correct path.

The endless early mornings, late nights, and long training sessions feel like nothing, especially when you are able to spend part of it together with your children.

As a dad, it means so much that I can celebrate how far we have come, how strong and united we are. And I hope that this is only the beginning of an awesome journey to last a lifetime.

How long have you been hosting? Acting? 
Started acting when I was 7 🙂 Hosting stint started 2012 🙂 

How did you get started?
It all started when I joined Little Miss Philippines 1990. I only made it to top 5. Everything else was history.

What got you interested in hosting/acting?
I always wanted to be an actress from the moment I gained consciousness in this world. It’s been a dream since I was a little girl. The hosting stint, I didn’t see coming 🙂 They got me as one of the hosts of Mars and that came as a surprise as I hadn’t done a hosting job ever in my life. 🙂  
Mars is a weekday primetime offering on the GMA News TV. It gives viewers fresh, fun, and intelligent conversation for and by mommies.

How do you harness your craft? 
With acting, I try to watch as many movies as I can, especially Oscar-nominated ones, and observe them. It’s continuous learning. You continue exploring different levels, and hopefully get to apply them at work. With hosting, regularly practice speaking and read current events and news so that I know what to say when certain topics are brought up. 

What was your most memorable moment in hosting/acting? 
Almost all projects have left good memories with me 🙂 

What are your favorite VMV products and why do you like using them?

How do you want to be known as? 
An actress and a host who is not all about fashion, beauty and skills, but someone who has substance as a person. In this crazy world of showbiz where not everyone is real, I want to be known as someone who is genuine and sincere in what I do and to people I meet. 

Do you have any tips for fans out there for fitness and sun protection? 
Fitness is a lifestyle, its not a one thing you do whenever you feel like it. It becomes a huge part of your life. For sun protection: I didn’t know how important it was to protect your skin from the sun until later on. So start young, start early. 🙂

Eco-Friendly Commuting Can Be Hard On The Skin…But It’s SO Worth It!

Weave through traffic on my bike. Climb up a pedestrian overpass. Line up for the train. Book an Über. Cruise down the Pasig River on the ferry. Each day is different as I move around the city, but some things are always the same — it’s sunny, it’s polluted, it’s dirty. That’s where VMV comes to the rescue.

Like many advocates, I wear a lot of hats. I consult for international organizations, I am building two NGOs, and I participate in talks, workshops and events all over Metro Manila — all with the aim of trying to make the city a place people love to live.

I wish that every step of my day was taken by foot or by bicycle. To me, walking and biking is about more than exercise (I no longer need a gym!) and the environment (cars are nasty gas guzzling, polluting machines). It is about the experience. When I walk or bike, I get to know the city, really know it. I stop for a fresh buko (coconut water) on the corner. I pop into a tailor shop to check out fabric and talk to the owner. I look up and admire a huge mango tree in the middle of the city. Boxed in a car, I don’t feel the city.

Because of my affinity for walking and biking, Armada Sport sunscreen is second only to toothpaste when it comes to my daily upkeep. It not only protects me from harmful sun rays, but creates a layer between my skin and the air pollution that spews from the exhaust pipes of the some 2.5 million vehicles on our roads in Metro Manila. The fumes cloud our lungs and our pores. I carry tea tree oil wipes to brush off the grime after a ride and a travel-sized tube of Armada to re-enforce throughout the day. I apply my makeup (Ooh-La-Lash! Mascara for an instant fix) once I’ve arrived and cooled down. My Illuminants Powder Foundation even has SPF 25 for extra protection.

I know to cover my face, neck, arms, legs, but talking with my dermatologist at the VMV Skin Research Centre + Clinics, I discovered that I was forgetting to take care of my lips and my hands. Now I use the Armada Moisturizing Protective Lip Balm (SPF 60+) and I also apply my sunscreen like a hand cream.

After a long day out and about, I need a serious shower. Back in the US, I wasn’t accustomed to shampooing my hair everyday. It’s not advisable to constantly strip our locks and especially during the colder months, I could give my hair a break from daily washes. But here in Manila, I have to rinse the city away everyday, sometimes more than once. I found conventional shampoos and soaps were drying out my hair and skin so I switched to VMV’s Essence Skin-Saving line of shampoo, conditioner, soap, and hand + body smoother. My hair feels clean and airy no matter how many times a week I wash it and my skin is super soft and happy; no more heat rashes.

Finally, I get monthly facials at the VMV Skin Research Centre + Clinics to deep clean and make sure I don’t accumulate unwanted build up. The result? I look like I never stepped outside (see photo for confirmation).

I wish we designed the city better so that everyone could move safely and efficiently as we go about our days. I wish our commutes were a source of joy, excitement, and discovery rather than stress. I’ll keep doing my part, bit by bit, to make sure that those wishes become a reality.

Last week, I spent the day on one of Manila’s most dangerous roadways, counting bicycles for research, armed head to toe with Armada, thankful for the shower I had to look forward to after a hard day’s work.

How long have you been biking? 
I started biking when I was a kid. I’ve always associated it with a sense of freedom. Biking to school, to a friend’s house, to my dance class or softball game, I didn’t have to depend on my parents or the bus for transportation. Later when I lived in Washington, DC and New York City, I would use my bicycle as a cheap, fast way to get around, but I never used my bicycle as often as I do now living in Manila, which is surprising to most people.

How did you start biking as a form of regular city transit? 
I didn’t imagine it would be possible to use a bicycle as a primary form of transportation in Manila. When I first moved here, I was intimidated to try it because of the traffic, pollution, and lack of road rules. I joined Manila Fixed Gear and my friend helped me buy a used bike. I learned the routes and gained the confidence during the group rides to try commuting on my own. Turns out that Metro Manila is actually an ideal city for biking. The roads are flat, there are short distances between places of interest, and aside from the main thoroughfares traffic is slow moving. Although cars, buses, and jeeps are the kings of the road right now, there are so many types of vehicles on the road and so much activity happening along the streets, I find that people are generally aware of what’s going on around them; I don’t feel totally ignored on a bicycle.

What has been your most memorable moment so far? 
In February of 2016, I biked all 17 LGUs (Local Government Units; how municipalities are organized in the city) of Metro Manila. I realized during that trip how many people are already biking in the city. Especially when you get out of the CBDs (Central Business Districts), into the barangays (“barrios,” villages), most households have a bicycle which is used to go to the palengke (wet market), basketball court, to transport goods, for vending or to bring children to school. I met security guards and construction workers who use bicycles daily to get from their homes in Laguna or Antipolo to their jobs in Taguig or Makati. The recreational bikers and organized bike groups in the city are very visible, but there’s a whole undocumented sector of the population that uses bicycles as their main form of transportation. It makes sense; there’s no gas or parking fees. Bicycles are a great equalizer and that’s what motivates me to push for a city where using a bicycle is not a statement but an enjoyable, effective way to move around.

To do that we need to work on making roads safer for people who bike, through protected bike lanes, better education for all road users, and better infrastructure such as bike racks and street lighting. It’s really difficult to bike in the rain and I’m still not sure the best way to go about that other than wearing protective gear. To address the pollution we need to focus on enforcing the Clean Air Act. We can combat the heat with more tree plantings along roads to provide shade. 

What’s your favorite VMV Product? 
I use Armada Sunscreen daily to make sure I’m protecting my skin. The sunscreen also creates a layer between my skin and the pollutants which otherwise clog my pores and even give me skin rashes. I have a lot of allergies to pollution; after my showers I use the Essence Skin-Saving Hand + Body Smoother lotion keep my skin healthy from the daily stresses of being out in the polluted environment.

Do you have any tips for people out there who want to be more responsible commuters? 
People commonly ask me how I keep “fresh” while biking, especially to work or social events. I try to wear clothes that are made of breathable materials and dark colors to prevent sweat marks. I sometimes wear a tank top while biking and then change into a dress shirt once I arrive at my destination. I also carry either towelettes or a small bottle of liquid soap to wash my face. I apply make-up after arriving. It also helps to carry a spray of some sort, like a perfume. I keep a travel-sized container of sunscreen to reapply when I have multiple destinations. It’s great when someone compliments me on my appearance and is then shocked to find out I arrived by foot or bicycle.

 You feel best when…. 
I want to show that sustainable transportation is not just good for the environment and for the city, but for our own well-being and self-esteem. I feel empowered when I can move myself on foot or on a bicycle in a way that I cannot sitting in a car in traffic. I feel healthy, happy, and productive when I’m in control of my own movement — what’s more attractive than that?

Sun Exposure Tips For Triathletes

Unless you decide to do an indoor triathlon (there are some), it is guaranteed that you will spend a large amount of time outdoors training and during the race itself. Depending on the triathlon distance you are training for, chances are you will be exposed to the sun rays for a minimum of 5 hours to upwards of 15 hours per week.

Should you be concerned? Yes!

Is there anything you can do? Yes!

With several years racing in the sport of triathlon from sprints to the Ironman distance, I take sunscreen seriously. As there are not so many secrets in our sport, I share a few that have worked for me.

1: Reapply. Again.

And again.

You need to get into the habit of reapplying approximately every couple of hours. Anything longer than this and your exposure increases as the time goes by.

Apply near the start of the race or training session. At transitions after the swim and the bike, reapply thoroughly. Both at the Canada and Melbourne Ironman races, they had sunscreen stations where attendants offered to  apply endless amounts of sunscreen for you!

2: Don’t Be Shy.

Ask for help.

Ask friends for assistance to apply sunscreen on hard-to-reach areas.

3: Think Clothing.

Prioritize protection.

Due to the nature of our sport, we sweat constantly, we play in the water, and are exposed to the wind. With this in mind, it is ever more critical to maintain adequate levels of protection.

Sun rays pass through clothing. More and more, sports wear manufacturers offer garments with a some UV protection. Something to consider.

4: More Is More.

Double up where you need it.

If you are like me, im quite exposed on my head. As such, I put on a nice layer of sunscreen on my scalp.

5: Wipe Your Hands.

Keep your grip dry.

Important for safety. Make sure to wipe your hands well after applying: you don’t want to get sunscreen on your handlebars as it will make your grip near impossible! Also, careful about getting it on your goggles as it will create a nice oily mess.

6: Bring Mini-Me.

Take sunscreen with you.

Take a mini tube with you for those periods where you plan to go longer than 2 hours so you can reapply while cycling (stopped on the side of the road) and while running.

If you plan to enjoy this beautiful sport for as long as you can, you’ll need to take care as much as possible. Everyone talks about training, coaches, equipment and nutrition. Sunscreen protection is right up on the list for me and a habit I pass down to my children. Get outdoors, get protected! #TriArmada
